Shillings converted to US dollars
Three months ago Dr. Betty came back from Uganda with a DVD of the school and interviews with the NEBSTA students.
Brian and I watched intently from her living room. The boys at the school were talking about how they were tired of eating "Mr. Bean" and wanted beef! They all spoke up when Dr. Betty asked if they "ALL" liked beef. They joked about how corn and beans was all that they were eating. Brian asked Betty how much that would cost to have a meal with beef for the kids. She said it wouldn't be much.
Today I asked George if we could sponsor a beef BBQ while we were there in Nebbi for the kids and staff. He said it was quite expensive and beef was not readily available for a meal for the kids.
It seemed like he was not sure what to say due to the cost. I asked how much it would cost to feed everyone at the school.
He said it was 1400 shillings per kilogram of beef. He said that we would need about 40 kilograms to feed everyone at NEBSTA. I ran the conversion through GOOGLE and came up with the title to this article. ($25.00 US dollars)
For these kids to have a whole protein food while we are there is important to us. We (the VandenBrink's) take for granted the three meat pizza that we get every Friday night at Erbelli's. No one thinks about not having an animal protein here in the US in their diet.
We are going to eat beef in Nebbi~ because...
